A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is usually placed over a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. At Waukegan Family Dental, we use custom-made, porcelain crowns for the best function and appearance.
A crown can be used to entirely "cap" a badly damaged tooth. In addition to strengthening a damaged tooth, the crown can be used to improve appearance, shape and alignment. In the case of a missing tooth, a crown can also be placed on top of a dental implant (which has been surgically placed in the jaw bone) to provide a replacement tooth.
Our custom-made porcelain crowns are matched to the color of your natural teeth. We may recommend a crown for a variety of reasons including:
Before your crown can be made, the tooth must be reduced in size so the crown will fit properly. We will then make an impression of the tooth to ensure a restoration that provides perfect fit and function. We will also determine the right color for your crown.
Using the impression, our dental lab will make your crown. In the meantime, we will place a temporary crown. Once your permanent crown is received, we will remove the temporary and cement your crown on the prepared tooth.
